The 76th-Annual Sturgis Rally
Sturgis is, arguably, the most famous of all motorcycle rallies in the United States. It is also one of the largest in the world. How big? Well, depending on who you listen to, the 2015 Sturgis Rally drew between 730,000 and a million bikers. If these numbers are correct, then the 2015 rally was the biggest one ever held in Sturgis. For 2016, the 76th-annual Sturgis Rally will be held from August 8th to 14th. Of course, the festivities in and around Sturgis last much longer, with bikers flooding into the South Dakota region for days before and after the main rally.
Rides and Other Things to Do
One of the most popular event that occurs during the Sturgis Rally is the annual Mayor's Ride, which will be held on August 8th. This will be the 14th-annual ride, and it will wind its way through several famous attractions in the Black Hills before ending at Custer State Park, where you will get to enjoy a lunch with Sturgis Mayor Mark Carstensen. The cost to join this ride is $176 per rider plus tax of $13.20, with all proceeds going to the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department.
There will also be another benefit ride through the Black Hills that will be held on August 10th. This event will be hosted by the BozBros, AKA World Superbike competitors and AMA National Champions Ben and Eric Bostrom. Don't be surprised if you're joined on this benefit ride by celebrities and famous racers for this 50-mile Mystery Ride. At the end of the ride, there will be a private party for participants. The Bostrom brothers will also be hosting a "Run What Ya Brung" race at the Sturgis Dragway on August 6.
Sturgis Dragway
Speaking of the Sturgis Dragway, there will be six days of racing going on at the track during the Rally. This is racing at its best, and you'll be able to see many of the top motorcycle racers from the USA and even from other countries competing at this event. There will be nine different classes at this event, including Top Fuel Nitro. Exact dates and times are being hammered out, but you can find the most up-to-date info at www.sturgisdrags.com.
Of course, Sturgis will also boast a slew of other exciting and fun events, including numerous poker rides. And as usual, the rally will feature non-stop entertainment, including many live bands. Plus, you know that all of the top names in the motorcycle industry will be on hand with booths, exhibits and demos. So you can expect the sleepy little town of Sturgis -- population 6,900 -- and the surrounding area to be overflowing with bikes and bikers from across the nation and even from around the world. Today, it's hard to imagine that this huge event began in 1938 with a race that attracted only 9 participants and a few onlookers.
