Framing Patches

Have a lot of extra patches you don't know what to do with?  One great option is to use them for decoration.  You can iron or sew them on to decorative throw pillows or even on to a quilt if you like.  Another options, though, is to frame your patches and hang them on the wall for decoration.  This creates a really unique type of artwork that many people don't really think about creating.  What's nice is that you can decide which patches go in the same frame and how they're placed, so it gives you a lot of room to be creative.

There are a few things you need to consider before you start your framing project.  The first is that it works a lot better with some frames than with others.  The best type of frames to use is the type where you pop the glass out, put your picture in the frame, and then press the glass back in.  This way, you don't have to turn the frame upside down to re-attach the back like you would if you use a frame where the glass is permanently affixed and you load the picture from the back.  The patches might shift if you use that type of frame.

Another thing to think about is how to mount the patches themselves.  If you put the patch in the frame against the backing, it will most likely fall to the bottom once it's hung.  One way to deal with this is to put a piece of felt behind the patches. The felt does two things: it adds more padding to the back of the frame, which will help sandwich the patches between the backing and the glass, holding them up.  The felt will also help hold the patch in place.  You don't even have to sew it or iron it on, meaning you can easily switch the patches around or put them on your jacket later.
