Have you ever tried focus stacking? It's a photography technique when you take multiple photos of the same photo focusing on different areas. You then use photoshop to stack the photos and have it automatically blend in the images giving you a visual of the embroidery depth. Here is one of my earlier attempts of focus stacking the Fallen Heroes patch.
