Peace!

peace US flag PatchEveryone recognizes the peace sign.  But what is its history?  And how did it come to be a symbol that is recognized worldwide?

The peace sign was designed in 1958 by Gerald Holtom for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in Britain. Holtom had been commissioned by the CND to create a symbol for the first anti-nuclear march from London to Aldermaston held Easter weekend 1958.

The peace sign's first public appearance was at this march. The symbol then quickly crossed the Atlantic.  The "fork" in the middle of the peace sign is how the letters "N" and "D" are spelled using semaphore and stand for "Nuclear Disarmament."  These symbols were then placed inside a circle representing the Earth.  The peace sign was born.

The above peace sign embroidered patch features an American flag background, and can be purchased through us at TheCheapPlace.
