Types of Motorcycle Helmets

There are primarily three different types of motorcycle helmets available for riders.  Each one has its own advantages and disadvantages.  You may find one type more comfortable over another.  No matter which one you choose, you'll get some protection in the case of an accident.

A half-shell motor cycle helmet is the smallest and lightest type of helmet.  They also tend to be the cheapest.  This type of helmet, sometimes called a beanie helmet, covers only the top of the head.  It doesn't go over the ears, and it doesn't really protect the face from wind, insects, or the sun.  People who don't like things to cover their face or don't want to wear a helmet but must due to state law will want a half-shell.  If you're racing or riding for long periods of time, you may want a helmet that offers more protection.

A three-quarter-shell helmet is the next step up.  This type of helmet doesn't wrap around the face, but it does provide protection in the back and comes down over the ears.  It's easier to talk to others while wearing this helmet, and they're not as hot.  They don't protect from the wind or insects, and your face can still get sunburnt, but they're not as bulky or as heavy as full helmets.  Police officers who ride motorcycles or bicycles often use this type of helmet because it's easy to talk to people while wearing it.

Finally, the full-face helmets cover your entire head.  They feature a clear visor that slides up and down to block out the wind and protect your face.  Normally, these helmets have small vents at the chin and within the hard shell to help cool the rider.  The inner part of the helmet is usually padded for comfort and to help absorb the impact from a fall.  These helmets are the safest, but they're also expensive and very heavy.
