One of the more interesting Vest Extenders you'll see is the Buffalo Nickel Vest Extender. It's interesting because there are a number of people who have never heard of the buffalo nickel. If you have heard of it, or even if you just like the buffalo, you may want to add one of these extenders to your collection. They're perfect if your vest has become just a bit too tight. Just snap this handy little device to each side of the vest and you're set.
So what is a buffalo nickel? The buffalo nickel, also called the Indian Head nickel, was a five-cent piece produced by the United States Mint from between 1913 and 1938. In 1911, the Taft administration decided to start changing some of the U.S. coins. They commissioned sculptor James Earle Fraser to come up with a new design for the nickel. His design features a buffalo on one side and a Native American face on the other. While there was some objection to these new nickels that delayed their circulation, the Secretary of the Treasury went ahead and had them issued in 1913.
However, there were some problems with these new buffalo nickels. They wore down very easily, for example. In 1938, after just 25 years in circulation (there's a law that says coin designs can't be changed for 25 years without congress's approval), the buffalo nickel was replaced with the Jefferson nickel.
You can still find a few buffalo nickels around today. In 2001, the design was used for a special commemorative silver dollar, and in 2006, a slightly modified version was used for the American Buffalo Gold Bullion.
This vest extender measures six inches long and is made from nickel plated metal. The ends are made from real leather and feature standard snap buttons that will fit most vests.
