If you've seen a group of motorcycle riders go past, you've probably noticed that a lot of them wear leather jackets, vests, and even some wearing leather pants. Why do bikers wear a lot of leather? There are a couple of different reasons. On the surface, there's the fact that leather looks really cool and tough. How badass would bikers look if they went around wearing wool sweaters? It's all about perception, and leather simply makes people look really tough and awesome.
Leather is also perfect for adding sew on patches to. You can stitch these patches on to these jackets to really make a statement. While most embroidered patches are designed to be ironed on, you can't do that with leather since the heat would damage it. However, that doesn't mean sewing patches on is difficult. On the contrary, it doesn't take that long, and it has the added bonus of being able to remove the patch later.
The main reason bikers wear leather, though, is to protect themselves. Leather jackets are very durable and can help protect you if you crash. In many crashes, the biker falls off the bike and goes skidding across the asphalt. This can result in a lot of road rash if you don't have a good jacket to protect your torso. While there are other materials that can protect you, leather is one of the best.
Bikers wear more than just leather jackets. Many like wearing leather gloves because they offer great protection for their hands. Leather vests don't provide as much protection, but they do look really cool and are quite stylish. Leather pants and chaps are also great protection, but they can also be very hot to wear, so you may not want to wear them during the summer.
