Bikers wear a lot of different things, but many people immediately think of skulls when they think of biker decorations. Many bikers do have skull patches, jewelry, stickers, and other items on their riding gear and on their bikes. But why do they do this? And what started the whole skull theme?
No one is certain what got bikers started wearing skulls. Some credit the old German tradition of associating skulls with the military and with being a part of the brotherhood of soldiers. Some people say the skull was used as a symbol of rebellion. Another reason may have to do with how the skull is often associated with death and things many people consider evil or scary. Bikers, at least some, like to convey the idea that they're scary people, so they add skulls to their riding gear to give them that image.
No matter where it came from, the fact remains that some bikers love their skull decorations. They try to add skulls to every part of their bike and their gear to give them an overall unified theme. You'll find some skulls designed to look very creepy, some designed to look funny and cartoonish, and even some skull patches and stickers for lady riders that feature the skull with roses. It all depends on what you're looking for.
Some bikers don't like skulls and don't wear them, and that's fine, too. It all depends on your style. No one really knows why bikers wear skulls, but it's not a mandate that you do. Although, as some bikers have put it, wearing skulls sure looks a lot cooler than wearing patches with puppies and rainbows on them!
