The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

Sturgis is coming!  The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is one of the largest biker rallies in the U.S.  The only other one that comes close to Sturgis in size is the Daytona Beach Rally.  Sturgis is always held the first week of August, which means it's less than two weeks away.  The rally will begin on August 6th this year and end on the 12th.  It will be held, as always, in the city of Sturgis, South Dakota.  This year will be the 72nd Sturgis Rally.  It has been held almost every year since 1938.  It only missed a few years because of World War II.

Sturgis is hosted by the Jackpine Gypsies, a motorcycle club that has been around for decades.  Clarence 'Pappy' Hoel is considered the founder of the group and the rally.  Sturgis has expanded since that first, single race in 1938, and today, over 400,000 people attend every year.  This year is sure to be no different.  There are three different rally zones, each with its own awesome events and entertainment.

What all does Sturgis include?  Well, there are five blocks of Main Street set aside for events, plus rides and other events at different locations.  The 10th Annual Mayor's Ride, the 8th Annual World Championship of Custom Bike Building, and Michael Lichter's annual exhibit will all be featured this year.  Also, Harley-Davidson and Victory will be on hand to show off their newest models (and some will even be available for purchase if you want to ride off on a new bike!).

If you haven't planned your Sturgis trip yet, there's still plenty of time!  Just take off work for a week and go!  You don't want to miss one of the largest bike rallies in the world.  Also don't forget to pick up a Sturgis 2012 biker patch while you're there so people will know you attended Sturgis.
