Are You A Friend of Bill W?

I'm a Friend of Bill W PatchAre you a friend of Bill W?  Many people probably have no idea who you're talking about.  Bill who?  But those who have a drinking problem might know.  Bill Wilson was one of the co-founders of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), the mutual aid group that brings those with a dependence on alcoholic beverages together for support, help, and fellowship.  Wilson, along with Dr. Bob Smith, created the first AA group what has become its signature twelve-step program.  This program promotes character development as a way of overcoming a dependence on alcohol.  While people from all walks of life can be alcoholics, bikers have to be especially aware of this because it seems like many rallies, rides, and other biker events have beer and other alcoholic beverages served at them.  It's also very dangerous to drink and drive, so bikers always have to be aware of their limits.

Bikers who are in AA may want to wear the I'm a Friend of Bill W Patch.  This patch lets fellow bikers know that the wearer shouldn't be tempted with alcoholic beverages.  In addition to the text, it also features the triangle inside of a circle logo of AA that is used on many of their posters and other items.  Some people do want to let others know that they don't want to be offered a beer, but they won't want to put a huge "I'm an alcoholic!" patch on their clothing.  Saying you're a friend of Bill W. is a good way of letting others know without being too direct.
