Zombies are a huge fad right now. Part of this is because of comics and shows like The Walking Dead, which have become incredibly popular. Zombies have more or less replaced vampires as the current favorite supernatural creature. Of course, that means they might be replaced by something else in a few years, but for now, it's all about the zombies.
A zombie is basically a corpse that has been reanimated through some kind of magic or scientific means. Zombies originated in the Voodoo religion. According to legend, a sorcerer is able to give life to a dead body and then control it completely traditional zombies weren't mindless creatures who lurched around looking for brains to eat. Instead, they were often summoned forth and sent after the sorcerer's enemies. Stories say that making a zombie eat salt would destroy it or force it to return to its grave.
The zombies found in today's horror stories are similar to this, but they've been modified a bit to make them scarier. Instead of serving a master, zombies are often seen as shambling creatures who walk with arms outstretched. They aren't usually very smart. Most of them are completely focused on eating human flesh or human brains. This stereotypical Hollywood zombie was first seen in Night of the Living Dead, a movie by George A. Romero. Since then, these types of zombies have been the most popular, although some books and movies do feature intelligent zombies and zombies that don't eat brains.
