So I was minding my own business, browsing through the Flag Patches at The Cheap Place when I saw the Rebel Flag Rocker patch. The patch is pretty simple - the Union Jack in a 3.75", banner-shaped rocker patch.
Now, I hate to get heavy on you so early on a Monday morning, but these are things I think about. I saw this patch and wondered whether or not wearing it would be patriotic. Twenty years ago I never would have worn a patch like this. Back then I believed that patriotism meant unyielding loyalty to my country regardless of what the feds did. The Union Jack was the flag of the South during the Civil War and it represented rebellion against Washington. To me, that was anathema.
Yet all these years later I find my outlook has changed. I'm still very much a conservative, but my conservative views have led me to a greater understanding of what the Civil War was all about. The Confederacy was not fighting for the right to own slaves, as is commonly taught in school, they were fighting for the right to uphold what the Constitution deems as "states rights". In other words, the right to run their states as they saw fit without unnecessary intervention from Washington. Based on what I see today, I must say that I agree with the Confederate position.
I guess that means I would wear the Rebel Flag Rocker patch on my jacket today. How about you?
