Unfortunately, when the British and French explorers arrived in Canada, many of the aboriginal people died from exposure to the various diseases the explorers brought with them, such as smallpox and the measles. The only group to minimize their losses was the Inuit, who had limited interaction with the Europeans.
However, the first settlers in Canada weren't British or French, they were Norsemen who attempted to create a colony in Newfoundland around 1000 AD. The settlers did not survive, and no one attempted to set up another colony until the Europeans arrived in 1497.
