Route 66 ? the Mother Road

Route 66 patchRoute 66 is one of the most historic highways in the United States.  It has several different nicknames: the Mother Road, the Main Street of America, and the Will Rogers Highway.  Why is it so important?  Well, it was one of the first highways to be created.  Route 66 was first established on November 11, 1926.  It runs more than halfway across the U.S.  The highway starts in Chicago, Illinois and ends in Santa Monica, California.  Along the way, it passes through six other states, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri.

The highway underwent many different improvements over the years, but in 1985, it was officially removed from the U.S. Highway System.  It was completely replaced by the Interstate System, but those portions of Route 66 that still exist have been named a National Scenic Byway.

Route 66 has served as an inspiration for many bikers and others who love to drive cross-country.  The highway inspired a song, 'Get Your Kicks on Route 66' written by Bobby Troup and performed first by Nat King Cole and a television show.  The show, called simply 'Route 66', ran during the early 1960s and followed two young men traveling across the U.S.

Many bikers love to drive Route 66.  The historic highway usually isn't as busy as the interstates, and it does pass through some gorgeous areas of the country.  There are also many interesting shops, restaurants, and motels along the highway that cater to those driving on Route 66.
