I was pleasantly surprised when I ran across the Tried By 12 Carried By 6 patch, among the 2nd Amendment patches at The Cheap Place, because I just recently had a conversation about this very subject with a friend. We are both licensed handgun owners in upstate New York, where gun laws are some of the most restrictive in the country. As it turns out, the message on this patch reveals a dirty little secret I didn't know until recently. What is that dirty little secret?
According to my friend, who's been a gun owner a lot longer than I, if either one of us fires our weapons for any reason other than target practice or sport shooting, we will be taken before the grand jury. Even if I fire at someone who has broken into my home and is threatening me with an ax, the case still goes to the grand jury. Isn't that amazing? I now fully understand the sentiment expressed in this patch. I would still rather face a jury for killing a man in self-defense than let some criminal murder my family and me.
