When someone says they need help from up above, most people usually think they mean from God. They pray for help from above since that's where most people believe Heaven is located. But military members and veterans have a different idea of getting help from above: snipers!
Snipers are used in many military maneuvers and even a number of police engagements. They usually position themselves on a nearby tall building, in a tree, or on a hill or other elevated location nearby. Snipers are equipped with high-powered rifles and a long distance scope. Their job is to usually provide cover while other military members or police officers are on the scene. The sniper must be aware of where the other members of his squad are while at the same time watching for hostiles. If he sees a hostile person moving towards his teammates, he often 'takes the shot', shooting them from a list distance before they can attack.
People who are snipers go through rigorous training. They have to have very steady hands, sharp eyes, and a willingness to make a difficult call. Often, snipers aren't just shooting to maim or injure, they shoot to kill. As a sniper, you have to be able to make those difficult decisions that may result in life or death for the other members of your team.
Veterans who have been saved by snipers may want to show their support for these men and women by wearing the My Idea of Help from Above is a Sniper on the Roof patch. It features a red crosshairs that indicate a target.
