The Ace of Spades

Ace of Spades patchThe Ace of Spades is one of the 52 traditional playing cards in a standard deck.  It's often considered the highest valued card in the deck, although that sometimes changes depending on the game.  What's really interesting about the Ace of Spades, though, is that he has a reputation as being the card of death.

The Ace of Spades has been used as a symbol of several different military groups.  In World War II, the members of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment painted the Ace of Spades on their helmets as a good luck charm (this was obviously before it became associated with death!).  Later, the card was used during the Vietnam War because U.S. troops believed that the Vietnamese connected the card with death.  They used it as a scare tactic, often leaving the card on the bodies of any soldiers they killed or placing it in places they knew the Viet Cong soldiers would see it.  This tactic was actually quite successful; in fact, the military actually asked the United States Playing Card Company to send them crates of nothing but the Ace of Spades.

Today, some bikers who used to be in the military wear an Ace of Spades patch because of its connection to the armed forces.  Others wear it because it's the death card, and they like how it's connected to living dangerously.  This Ace of Spades patch is a very plain version of the card, unlike some, the Ace of Spades is often very ornate, but many people prefer the basic, simple design.
