The Different Types of Army Uniforms

U.S. Army PatchAnyone who has been in the U.S. Army knows that there are different types of uniforms.  Many people who aren't in the armed forces, though, usually think of soldiers dressed in camouflage green, that pattern of black and different shades of green that is the standard uniform for most army and other armed forces personnel.  This uniform is called the Battle Dress Uniform, and it was used as the standard uniform up until the mid-2000s.

During that same period, many soldiers who were deployed to arid areas would wear the Desert Camouflage Uniform.  This uniform was very similar to the Battle Dress Uniform except it featured a pattern of dark brown, beige, and mint green.  Instead of dark green patches, soldiers wore light brown ones.  For example, the U.S. Army Patch - Desert Beige color would be worn since it blended in better with the uniform and the soldier's surroundings.

While this patch is still a favorite among bikers and other veterans who served or saw combat in desert conditions, it's no longer really used by the U.S. armed forces.  This is because the desert uniform and the Battle Dress Uniform have both been replaced by the Army Combat Uniform.  This uniform actually blends in some of the same colors from the desert uniform and the standard battle dress.  This universal camouflage pattern features tan, gray, and green, and it can be used in any environment.  The patches are now done in a green color that matches the green in the uniform.
