The Jesus Fish Patch

Fish Sign PatchWhile many Christians like to wear a cross patch on their jackets, some prefer other religious symbols.  One of these alternate symbols is the Jesus Fish, which can be worn with or without a cross patch.  It has been a symbol of Christianity for quite some time.  In fact, it was used by early Christians as a secret symbol during the time of the Roman Empire.  According to legend, if a Christian met another on the road, he would draw half of the arc of the fish outline.  If the other person drew the other half to complete the fish, it was a sign that they were of the same faith.  Now you can do the same with this Jesus Fish Patch, which you'll find in the Christian Patches section on The Cheap Place.

While it's often called the Jesus Fish or the Christian Fish, the real name for this image is Ichthys, which comes from the Koine Greek word for fish.  Some versions of the image feature the five Greek letters that spell out Ichthys and which have become an acronym for the saying 'Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior'.  Of course, fish also play an important part in the Gospels of the Bible, and Jesus talks about fish a number of times.  This makes the connection between the fish symbol and Christianity even stronger.

Today, you'll find the Jesus Fish on bumper stickers, shirts, and, of course, patches.  This particular Jesus Fish patch measures 3 inches long by 1.5 inches tall.  The fish is embroidered in white on a black background.  You can iron the patch on to almost any cloth material, although you should sew it on if you're going to put it on leather so you don't damage it.
