With the increase in school shootings and other tragedies, many in the United States are calling for gun reform. Some people understand the problem: guns in the hands of crazy, unstable people lead to horrible events. The old saying that 'guns don't kill people, people kill people' is actually right in some ways. Guns make it easier, but they are just an object with no intent. It's only when people start using them to hurt others that things go wrong. Making it harder for these people to have guns is something most people agree on.
But other people don't understand this. They continually push for laws completely removing guns. Some even go so far as to say police officers and military personnel in the country shouldn't have access to guns! They always miss the fact that people who want to do harm to others or themselves will find a way to do it. They will smuggle guns in from other countries, build their own rudimentary gun, or start using knives. Without guns to defend ourselves, especially if law enforcement and the military don't have guns, things will only get worse. Not all guns are used for defense, either. Some people simply enjoy hunting or practicing marksmanship.
