The Dominican Republic is situated on the island of Hispaniola, which is a part of the Greater Antilles chain of islands in the Caribbean.  The island is actually split into two countries: the western third of Hispaniola is Haiti, while the other two-thirds of the island make up the Dominican Republic.  Even though it shares its island, the country is the second largest in the Caribbean (Cuba is larger).  The Dominican Republic is home to about ten million people.

The Dominican Republic was discovered by Christopher Columbus on his way to the Americas in 1492.  The Tainos people lived on the island, but they were soon conquered by the Spanish.  The first permanent European settlement in the Americas was founded on Hispaniola shortly after Columbus arrived, and it became Spain's first capital in the West.  Later, in 1821, the country achieved its independence, but it came at a cost: the country was ruled by a slave owner and tyrant.  In 1844, the Dominicans revolted and, after a number of years of conflict, eventually created their own democratic nation.

The flag of the Dominican Republic features a large, centered white cross with four squares, two blue and two red.  The center emblem features six similar flags, a bible, a golden cross, an olive branch, a palm branch, and the motto of the country in Latin: 'God, Country, Freedom'.
